Online role-playing grew out of its tabletop counterpart, and became popular in the early 90's (perhaps earlier depending on who you ask). Online RPGs are usually called MUSHes (Multi-User Shared Hallucination). As with tabletop games, the theme can vary wildly from game to game. There are science fiction MUSHes, fantasy MUSHes, and everything inbetween.
A MUSH looks a lot like the old Infocom games like Zork or Adventure, with textual descriptions
for everything, and statements like "Joe walks through the east exit." But instead of having
pre-programmed monsters and puzzles, a MUSH lets you interact in real-time with players from
around the world to tell cooperative stories.
