Background
Hannah comes from a military family. Grandfather, father, uncles, two brothers and a sister - people always said it was something in the Westren family genes. And, after seeing Hannah and her family, one could be forgiven for thinking that she was adopted. In a world of "Yes, sir" and "No, ma'am", Hannah's favorite words were "Why?" and - more often - "Why not?"
Though born on Aerelon, Hannah moved around a lot, following her father as he was assigned to various posts. Hannah was never a great student - science and math always gave her trouble. She was an above-average athlete, but was forever in the shadow of her older sister Maura, who excelled in both sports and academics and made their father proud by heading off to the Fleet Academy after high school.
Hannah screwed around in college, eventually deciding on theater as a major because it sounded easy. A passable actress, she thought of trying to parlay her good looks into a career in the movies. But she took a journalism class and, much to her surprise, actually liked it. It suited her innate curiousity.
After being editor of the college newspaper, she scored an internship at the Aerelon Gazette. Her next job was as a low-level researcher for the Colonial Broadcast Network. She eventually got a spot as a field correspondent. She wasn't famous, like one of the top anchors, but was one of those faces you see all the time but never really register until they get their big break.
IC Events
The Attacks
A chance assignment found Hannah on the Aerelon 118 at the time of the attacks, covering the Governor's visit to Caprica. It was only supposed to be a quick trip, and Hannah found herself a refugee with only a small overnight bag of worldly possessions. She lived in horrible conditions on the 118 until 42AD, when FNS got a broadcasting suite in the Fairland Hotel.
FNS
Hannah was one of the founding members of the Fleet News Service. Her arrest and subsequent coverage of various important events earned her a sort of celebrity status within the Fleet. Because of that, people often forget that she is just a young cub reporter with only a few years of actual journalism experience.
Her stories were universally pro-military, with flattering profiles of the Marines and Air Wing. In spite of this, the ongoing conflict between Hannah and the marines have caused some to accuse her of hating the military and attempting to stir up trouble. A few blunders (like touting her husband's skill in the sack on-air while stoned) cost her credibility in some circles, but she was still the fleet's most prominent reporter.
Hannah was forced to give up her journalism career when she was drafted into the marines.
Marines
On 20AD, Hannah gave an inflammatory report about the military abandoning the civilian fleet at the ringed planet, and Colonel Nash ordered her arrested for treason. Sergeant Tyne, one of the marines who came to arrest her, got a little rough and broke Hannah's wrist, nearly causing a riot in Cat's Cafe in the process. Hannah was released a few days later and the charges dropped. The incident catapaulted her to fame/infamy throughout the fleet and began a long-standing bitterness between Hannah and the marines, particularly Tyne and Master Sergeant Limmer. It also left her in a cast for ten weeks.
While in Pacifica's press office on 84AD, Hannah received word that Tug was on the fleet shuttle that was lost on the Ice Planet. Distraught, she broke regulations and went to the Navy Berthing, where she was arrested by the Master at Arms, Deke O'Bannon. Although she was released the next morning, the incident earned her the dubious distinction of being the only civilian to be arrested by the military police twice.
On 117AD, Hannah spent a week aboard Pacifica "playing soldier". Ostensibly it was for a story about the Marines, but really it resulted from a desire to prove that Limmer was wrong about her. The game was that she would act like, and be treated like, a Marine Private for the duration of her stay. She was with the Marines aboard the Tauron's Pride when they were attacked by the Cylons and was shaken by the incident.
The Marine story became Hannah's white whale. She worked on it half-heartedly, never finding the elusive 'hook' to make it fly. She finally published it on 318AD, nearly 7 months after starting.
Tug
Hannah met deck chief Tug Wilson on 67AD after a drunken encounter in Cat's. It would have ended up a one night stand were it not for... technical difficulties. Rather than thanking her lucky stars for the near miss, Hannah started dating Tug. They were married on 129AD in a small ceremony on board Pacifica, followed by a large reception in Cat's Cafe. The two of them lived in the Fairland Hotel for awhile, but later moved into a townhome with Niki Ladas and Jacob Elhanan to split costs.
They've remained a happily married couple, even in spite of Tug's drunken encounter with a stripper and Hannah's ongoing battle with depression. There was a lot of talk of them trying to have kids, but that has faded in recent months. Rumour has it they've been having some trouble with it, but they don't talk about it openly with anyone but their closest friends.
Militia
When the Pacifica abandoned the civilian fleet on 155AD, Hannah took it hard. She took leave from her job with FNS, leaving Greg and Samuelle to run things. Hannah tried to join the Fleet Militia, but was placed on reserve status due to failing the entrance physical. Nonetheless, she fought with the militia when the Cylons boarded the Dream on 161AD and 167AD and managed to take down a couple Toasters. She was shot in the leg during the second fight and spent a few days recuperating in the Dream's clinic before returning to work.
On 184AD, Hannah and fellow "militia chick" Corbett Glyph spoke to Governor Abrams about leading the militia. Neither wanted to do it on their own, but nobody else stepped up and they figured together they could handle it. They were given joint command of the militia and the title of Commander. It was rough going at times, and it didn't help knowing that most of the marines considered the militia - and her in particular - a joke. But Hannah devoted herself to the task - studying field manuals, getting advice from various officers and NCOs, and leading drills and team-building exercises.
The militia fought the Cylons once more when the Tauron's Pride was boarded on 273AD. As the only militia member left standing, Hannah had to sort out the aftermath. At the recommendation of the marine lieutenant on the scene, she agreed to let the militia wounded be evacuated to Pacifica's sickbay - a decision she would later come to regret after all the trouble it caused.
The militia's last stand came on 332AD when the Cylons boarded the Fortune Five. Corbett was badly shot and later died in sickbay. Hannah suffered some broken/bruised ribs when her vest took a hit. The loss of her close friend, on the heels of the destruction of her home on the Dream, was enough to send Hannah back into a downward spiral once more.
Martial law was declared a few days later, and shortly thereafter the militia was officially disbanded.
Pacifica
Hannah became a refugee once more when the Dream was destroyed. Her home was lost, along with nearly all of her possessions. Hannah took up residence in the refugee berthings on the Fortune Five. She attempted to enlist in the Navy (partly to be on Pacifica with Tug, partly out of fear of being drafted by the marines) but was turned down until her ribs healed. When Commander Starr allowed civilian family members to live on Pacifica, Hannah moved there to live with Tug.
She began to have second thoughts about enlisting, which turned out to be bad when she received a draft notice into the marines on 392AD. Horrified, Hannah tried everything she could to get out of it, even appealing directly to the commander. It was to no avail, and Hannah officially became a marine on 399AD. Thanks to the surprising recommendation of LtJG Pride, she escaped the infantry and was assigned to the MPs instead.
Marines and Cylons
In the marines, Hannah handled herself better than most anyone expected, not wanting to give them any excuse to criticize. She became squad leader of her group in basic training, and was a sort of mentor to some of the other draftees, particularly the ex-militia folks. Her leadership qualities and combat experience got her posted at the rank of Corporal.
She was unhappy at first. Shutting up and taking orders was never easy, and the constant digs against the civilians and militia didn't help. But she eventually fell into a routine. Thanks to the mentoring of MAA Draco Priam, she even became a decent MP. The birth of her godson, Tiber Parks, gave her something to occupy her time, and she and Roan even built a Pyramid Court aboard Pacifica.
Things went all right until Sagittaron rescue mission. Not only was Hannah shaken up by a bullet striking her helmet - her friend Marcus Veritas was killed, her presumed-dead sister Maura showed up, and her dead best friend, Corbett Glyph turned out to be a Cylon. It was enough to set her world spinning.

One Year Later
Much to most everyone's surprise (and to the dismay of some), Hannah remained in the marines rather than requesting a discharge. She settled into the role, eventually becoming a Sergeant with the MP investigation section. She stayed aboard Pacifica with Tug (who remained deck chief, fawning over all his new 'birds'), but spends much of her free time on the surface with her sister and her friends (particularly Corbett, Greg, and the Quirinos-Parks clan). The Wilsons are still childless, so Hannah contents herself with being "Aunt Hannah" and spoiling all her friends' kids.
Epilogue
Tug and Hannah went off with the fleet when it left Picon. The gunshot wound suffered during the final battle left Hannah with nerve damage in her shoulder. It wasn't a debilitating injury, but it was enough to get her a medical discharge from the marines. She returned to civilian life and became a teacher (early elementary school mostly). Tug stayed in the military, cementing his reputation as the most experienced aircraft technician in the Navy. (Not to mention the most foul-mouthed, loudest and worst dressed. Yes - The Shirt survived.)
Their son Tobias was born nine months after the Battle of Picon. Though Hannah persisted in calling them Andy and Toby, to everyone else they were "Big Tug" and "Wee Tug". Toby was sickly and seemingly allergic to everything. He outgrew it eventually, but his parents' overprotective coddling turned him into a spoiled brat. Sophia followed a few years later. Again Hannah lost the battle of the nicknames, as "Sophie" was dubbed "Soapy". Ah, the perils of being married to a Navy man. Unlike her troublesome brother, Sophie was the quiet one. She had a tomboy streak, and would more often be caught in a pair of coveralls, helping her dad fix a car engine, than in a dress.
In the years following the settlement of New Pacifica, Hannah wrote two books. The first was "Militia Chicks", a history of the fleet militia that almost nobody read. The second was a trashy romance novel, written under a pseudonym. It was mildly successful, but her children and ever-expanding posse of 'nieces and nephews' kept her too busy to ever write another.
The Wilsons grew old and happy together on New Pacifica with their kids, grandkids, and extended family.
