Another Man's Freedom Fighter

A Sci-Fi Dystopian Thriller

In a colony on the brink of revolution, one woman takes a stand against tyranny.

All her life, Caitlin Farland has watched the Mars Colony suffer under the oppressive heel of the Terran Federation. Every day, the demands for independence grow louder and more violent. Her father was one of those fighting for Mars’ freedom before he was caught and locked away. Though her rebel sympathies run deep, Caitlin is reluctant to follow in his footsteps. She’s a paramedic. Her job is to save lives, not take them.

When Federation Peacekeepers turn a peaceful rally into a bloodbath, Caitlin barely escapes alive. They blame the rebels for the massacre, but Caitlin knows the truth. In trying to expose the cover-up, she makes herself a target. The Federation sends ruthless counter-terrorism agent Jack Decker to bury the evidence—and her.

Forced to go on the run, Caitlin turns to her father’s old friends for help. She finds an ally in resistance fighter Alex Garrison. Together, they must elude Decker and the Peacekeepers long enough to reveal the truth. And Caitlin has to decide how far she’s willing to go to fight back against the Federation.

Note: Another Man's Freedom Fighter was originally published as Martian Dreams. Though the heart of the story is the same, this fifteen-year anniversary reboot features tighter pacing, improved character arcs, new scenes, and more.

Another Man's Freedom Fighter by Linda Naughton follows the journey of Caitlin Farland, a tenacious paramedic living in a Martian colony. The scent of rebellion permeates the air as Martian freedom fighters demand independence from the Federation, an oppressive governing body overseeing Earth and the colony itself. During a non-violent rally orchestrated by the Martian Liberation Society, a heinous attack leads to the loss of many innocent lives. Caitlin somehow manages to escape the carnage. But having stumbled upon a massive government coverup, her life is now in grave danger. She has little choice but to confide in Alex Garrison, a rebel freedom fighter. With the Federation's lapdogs, Captain Jack Decker and the Peacekeepers, on their tail, can Caitlin and Alex survive long enough to expose the truth? Or is this the end of the road for them both?

I enjoyed this thrilling and pulsating story from beginning to end. Another Man's Freedom Fighter by Linda Naughton is an exhilarating novel that seamlessly blends action and political intrigue into a fast-moving narrative. I loved Caitlin's personal dilemma and how it ties into the whole storyline. She doesn't want to end up like her father, a shadow of a once vibrant hero. Yet, her resilient spirit--something both she and her father have in common--propels her into a role of heroism and revolt. Caitlin is truly an iconic female lead and a powerful force to be reckoned with. Her character development accelerates through her interactions with Alex and their quest to fight for justice. Their dynamic is both nuanced and profound. Even though the ending is bittersweet, it adds a deeper layer to Caitlin's already complex story. If you're a fan of political thrillers with riveting dystopian settings and compelling characters, you'll thoroughly enjoy this book.

Review by Keana Sackett-Moomey. Originally posted on Reader's Favorite.

Being a big fan of The Hunger Games and The Martian, this was, in many ways, the perfect book for me. Fast-paced, with hardly a dull moment, it’s the story of a young, female protagonist, Caitlin, living and working on Mars who must battle the oppressive Terran Federation. Crisply written with strong character development (particularly Caitlin), this is a cleverly plotted sci-fi thriller that will keep most fans of the genre eagerly turning the page.

There were a number of elements to this story I particularly enjoyed. Firstly, Caitlin is a fantastic protagonist; not only is she likeable, but she also has stamina and inner strength. I particularly liked how the author handled her dilemma of following or not following in her father's rebellious footsteps. Secondly, the domed city setting is wonderful, adding a claustrophobic atmosphere to the novel. And, thirdly, the author understands the importance of pacing in a book of this nature i.e. a thriller; as a result, it's one hell of a ride!

So, if you are an older young adult or an adult looking for a compelling novel filled with twists, turns - and suspense, I'd happily recommend Another Man’s Freedom Fighter to you. Although I personally think the title lacks punch, the story is a blast. I just hope we get to see more of this feisty protagonist in the future.
